Galleon 43 Print E-mail

I've recently been in touch with a new start-up set of guys called Frontier Entertainment. Primarily Lew C. and Jacob Phillips, they are a young bunch of guys looking to break into the indie scene. Their first comic is called "Galleon 43", and I've been privileged enough to have a read through of the script and a sample of the artwork. It's going to be launched at 2008's Bristol Comics Expo, and I have to say it's looking impressive.

A futuristic tale of pirates, and a taxi driver that gets caught up with them. Written by the 14 year old Lew C., and drawn by the 13 year old son of Marvel Zombies artist Sean Phillips, Jacob Phillips. I'm looking forward to finally seeing it, and it looks to be a very ambitious project. I wish them all the best with it!

I've just received an email from Mark over from the Richmond Gallery, and he's sent me new information about sending your art to be part of the gallery. Best thing is, comics are allowed! The first news about it was back at the start of October. Added another review just today, of {ln:Marraquai} by {ln:Ben Dickson} and James McKay. Worth checking out.

Finally, this Saturday at Camden Market, {ln:David Baillie}, {ln:Oli Smith} and the guys from {ln:Tales From the Flat} (possibly with others) will be selling their comics. So go down and check them out! It's aiming to be a regular thing, too. David will be selling his Tongue of the Dead trades, which contain a quote by yours truly. Worth it just for that!

2008 open opportunities for artists at the Riverside Gallery, Richmond

Liveline: Comics Open (1 March - 13 April 2008)

Through its annual open exhibition opportunities, Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham helps artists both locally and nationally to showcase their work in group exhibitions. In 2006-7, over 500 individual artists (excluding those participating in Arthouse) exhibited work in a range of open exhibitions across three galleries - Orleans and Stables Galleries, Twickenham and the Riverside Gallery in Richmond. Since 2005, there have been 4 exhibitions dedicated to or incorporating comic art. Deadline end of January 2008.

In 2008, we have further opportunities for you to submit artwork for the second of our comic open exhibitions. We are seeking original artwork (digitally created work is accepted) and printed comics by up-and-coming and established artists who are self-published or work for small-scale or independent publishers.

• Artists can submit up to 5 original works (and 5 comics) either via A4 sized photographic prints, colour printouts or high-resolution jpegs submitted on CD. Original artwork is not accepted. Comics can be submitted.

• Please clearly label each submission with: artist’s name, title of work, publication, date, media, approximate size and price before commission if the work is for sale (the gallery will add on an additional 40% commission to the artist’s price).

• In addition, please enclose contact details, an artists statement and if possible a CV.

• There is a £10.00 administration charge (which also contributes towards exhibition costs); £7.50 concessions (please include proof). Please make cheques payable to ‘L.B.R.U.T’. Your submission will not be accepted without payment.

• If you would like images or comics returned, please enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope.

Successful artists will be contacted by email or in writing approximately two weeks after the deadline.

Written by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Hello again everybody. I've just read Tom Humberstone's 24 Hour comic, and it's a very good read. Considering the circumstances he's created a great short comic, and I commend him for tackling the topic he did. If you'd like to read the comic, visit www.VentedSpleen.com, and check out the two editions of his column under our Articles section!

We've added {ln:Monkeys with Machineguns} to the Publishers/Comics section, and a couple more reviews, too. Just below you'll see Andy Winter's second column, too. Expect a lot more content coming up in the next few weeks!

And {ln:Tales From The Flat}'s new collected edition (issues #1-3) is now available for purchase from their website! modernmonstrosity.moonfruit.com

We attended the Saturday of BICS just gone, and it was a fantastic day. There's a full article just below, check it out.

Also, a good amount of comics were bought at BICS, so we've got a lot more reviews going to be coming online within the next few weeks, starting straight away with Oli Smith's new {ln:Summer Ball} comic, which was one of the best buys on Saturday. A really brilliant comic.

So keep checking back for updates, and hope you enjoy them!

Unfortunately the Lancaster Comic Convention originally planned for 11/11/2007 has now been cancelled. Organiser Ant Mercer has offered his apologies for any disappointment, but is hopeful about the Convention returning for 2008/2009. Anyone who had booked a table and sent cheques will have their cheques sent back, or be given a refund.

We wish Ant and the Lancaster Comic Convention good luck for the future!
